Barkly East Accommodation

Welcome

TO BALLOCH - THE VALLEY OF A THOUSAND VIEWS!

Come to BALLOCH and enjoy our camping areas or our cottage and experience our spectacular and magical mountain scenery.

Balloch is situated in the Wartrail area of the Barkly East district in the Eastern Cape at the southern tip of Lesotho and close to Lundeans nek.

Our farm Balloch, tucked away deep in the Witteberg mountains, has been in the Frost family for 4  generations and is of the most spectacular and unique valleys you will find in South Africa if not in the world. We love to share its towering crags and abundant sandstone rock formations with our guests.

On Balloch we farm Bonsmara cattle for beef, and Dohne merino sheep for mutton and wool.

Balloch cottages are made up of the 'Willowstream Cottage' which is a self catering cottage and  two very special camping areas - the cave camp area where one camps under a huge overhang providing fantastic shelter in bad weather, and the river area next to the stream.

Our power is completely off the grid - we run a  hydro electric power system. Because this system relies on rainfall it can be unreliable in times of drought. There is only one power point at each of our two camp areas and no multiplugs are allowed. So a big group must be aware that only one fridge will be acceptable the rest must run on your own power systems, batteries or solar.

Our farm is host to a number of well known bushman paintings.

Balloch is a natural heritage site because of the Cape and Bearded vulture colonies that nest in the basalt cliffs which form a broad band in our mountains.

At Balloch, conservation of the veld is very important to us and we strive for maximum grass cover, diversity of species and ever increasing climax grasses while maintaining profitability.

The well known "Willowstream"runs through the farm with very easy access for fly-fishermen who will enjoy fishing for both brown and rainbow trout.

Balloch is the perfect stop over for trips into and out of Lesotho using the Telle Bridge border crossing.

Balloch is the half way stop over for the increasingly popular annual “Skyrun” ( in November ) and “Wartrail Tri-Challenge”(in March)which are extreme adventure race events held each year. See   www.pureadventures.co.za

Balloch is central to the 8 passes in the region - the perfect place to stay in our cottage or at our camp areas whilst discovering these mountain delights.
